Associations of the atherogenic index of plasma and its modified indices with the incidence and progression of cardiovascular-liver-metabolic multimorbidity
A prospective UK Biobank study examining how AIP and adiposity-modified indices relate to the onset and progression of cardiovascular-liver-metabolic multimorbidity.
Research question
Can the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), alone or combined with measures of overall and central adiposity, help identify people at higher risk of cardiovascular-liver-metabolic multimorbidity?
Study
This prospective analysis included 370,258 UK Biobank participants without a cardiovascular, liver, or metabolic disease at baseline. Eight AIP-based indices were evaluated for incident multimorbidity, disease progression, predictive performance, and potential mediation by inflammatory, hepatic, and renal biomarkers.
Key finding
All eight indices were associated with higher risk of incident multimorbidity during a median 16-year follow-up. AIP-BMI, AIP-WC, and AIP-WHtR also showed consistent associations across disease transitions, while inflammatory and organ-function biomarkers explained part of the observed relationships.
