Association of adverse adulthood experiences with cardiovascular kidney metabolic syndrome

Research question
How are adverse adulthood experiences associated with advanced cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome, and how do depressive symptoms relate to this association?
Study
This cross-sectional analysis included 5,601 participants from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Advanced CKM syndrome was defined as stages 3–4, and associations were examined using logistic regression, exploratory mediation, joint, subgroup, and sensitivity analyses.
Key finding
Compared with low adverse-adulthood experiences, high exposure was associated with advanced CKM syndrome (OR 1.83, 95% CI 1.26–2.67). Participants with both high exposure and depressive symptoms had higher odds than those with neither factor (OR 2.49, 95% CI 1.87–3.32). The authors noted that the findings were driven primarily by psychosocial experiences, while health-related items may reflect disease-related factors.
